View the Story

There is a section of the CSUS website called Who is Jesus Christ. We view this as a crucial component because it is the area where surfers seeking more knowledge and/or a saving knowledge of Christ can find it.
We recently added a presentation called View the Story that shares the Gospel message. What is really cool about this is that anyone can easily go to the Awareness section of our site entitled Who is Jesus Christ, click on the Read the Story presentation and click Share on the upper right hand tab. This enables you to send this link out to anyone you want to.
We'd be really stoked for you to check out the presentation and share with your friends, Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, blogs, webpages and whatever other accounts you use. Open the View the Story presentation and click Share. You may also copy and paste this direct link
http://www.ViewTheStory.com/?c=1280
This in turn enables us to connect with people all over the world with the life saving message of faith in Christ.
Finally share your stories with us at info@christiansurfers.com, we'd love to hear them!

Letter from John Carper

Aloha, aloha everyone

Wow, all I can say is WOW!!! Well, we just got finished with 4 days of absolute craziness!!! We were given a booth at the HURLEY OPEN and I was invited to shape a board in an amazing portable shaping room complete with bleachers, filmed by FUEL TV.
I wasn't sure what to shape and somehow I got this idea to go back to my first board I ever shaped under a mango tree in Maui over 40 years ago. I didn't know about templates then so I just eyeballed it. Then I thought it would be cool to shape it with a chainsaw, yes, a chainsaw!!!
Then I was talking to Peter Mel and he needed a 7'8 gun for Puerto Escondido. So , I put it all together and, without telling Pete, decided to hand shape his board WITHOUT templates and with a CHAINSAW. Word got around and everyone thought I was kidding but the arena was packed and there was this huge camera, worth $150,000.00 in the shaping room with me. Yes, $150,000.00!!!
So I brought out a blank, took a couple of measurments and just drew by hand an outline. So far I am not getting much reaction but then I pulled out this big chainsaw and cut the board out and started to rough shape it. People were so stoked. I roughed it out pretty well and then finished it off with my Skill planer. The board came out beautiful, even though it took me 3 hours.
Pete Mel was running the jet ski at the contest and I had left a note that I was going to shape his board with a chainsaw. When he saw the board after I was done he was so stoked. I then got to interview him for TV and he was telling how he was honored and so stoked!!! I did about 5 other interviews and we probably will see an article or two. Awesome promo.
We were given a booth as well and we had fixed up pretty nice but I thought it was in a terrible spot. It faced away from the crowd and was super hot so I took off the back wall and instantly had a non stop tidal wave of people walking straight by our booth for the entire event. It was facing the entrance. I have never been with so many people at once and it was real hard the first day but I really got into it and it became super fun. We partnered up with Christian Surfers and we gave away thousands of Bethany Hamilton DVDs and tons of cool stuff. We printed out a thousand new JC stickers and boxes of our catalogues. People were stoked on our bamboo t shirts and we met so many cool people. I 'm calling it a huge success even though Etsuko and I are totally burnt out.
I want to thank CHRISTIAN SURFERS for being virtual slaves to us. They brought us food and killer DEIDRICHS coffee. They carried all of our stuff in and out. They manned our booth so we could watch the finals and do interviews.
They not only helped me but helped EVERYONE there. They brought a huge team and let everyone know they were there to help in any way possible. They even helped LOST... breakdown. How cool is that?
This will probably be one of the most famous surf contests in history and we are so stoked to me a part of it.
Our new rider, Bruno Rodrigues got to the quartefinals and Slater went down in the quarters. Local boy , Brett Simpson won. Amazing waves.
We also want to thank Scott Bass from Sacred Craft for making the shaping room and bruddah Bob Hurley for putting on a great contest. And especially Jesus Christ for bringing so many people to our booth with words of encouragement after a pretty tough year of business. We are making a difference and a lot of people are stoked on what we are doing. I'm ready to get back in the ring... after a good rest.

...mahalo and God bless...JC

Shaping...

“Do you mind if I put this laminate under the glass?” The small piece of rice paper read “AFG”. I had come to fulfill a dream of shaping my own surfboard, little did I know that God would use the experience and those three letters to shape me.

When Paul Hyers, one of the Core Leaders of Christian Surfers Jacksonville, had invited me to come by his house and shape a board I was stoked. For the next few months I thought about it often. I’ve wanted to shape a board for years. I guess a lot of surfers are intrigued by the process and the thought of riding a piece of art that they personally made. So, I was prepared for the big day; I knew the kind of board, dimensions, colors, fin set up, everything. But, what I wasn’t prepared for was God speaking to me through the experience and this backyard (well, front patio) shaper.

Paul grew up around Christianity but rejected it. He jokes about the old commercials on TV that said, “no one plans to be a bum.” He and a friend decided that this was exactly what they wanted - to be surf bums. When he got to the end of himself and decided that his way wasn’t working he called the local chapter of CSUS in his town. The rest is history. He is a committed servant to the surfing community. The first time I met him was on the phone. He called me to ask if he could come to our town and give away wax and Bibles at a surf contest. I thought that was pretty cool but I was even more impressed when I discovered that serving people in love wasn’t something Paul and the other guys and girls in the chapter do on Saturdays but is a way of life.

As we “mowed foam” Paul shared with me things God was doing in his life and the lives around him. One story was about a grom that came by the house ( cause what grom wouldn’t want to hang out with a shaper). So, Paul began telling him about the upcoming CS Prep School. The kid was really interested and started filling out an application. When it came to the place on the app that ask him to share his testimony he ask Paul what a testimony was. Long story short, the grom prayed with Paul to give his life to Jesus.

That day we talked about fin set ups, tail design and how God has designed each of us to play a role in this amazing story that HE is unfolding. We talked about all the opportunities Paul was having to love people from talking with them about the LORD to showing up early for events and making sure everything was ready to go or staying late to make sure it was all cleaned up.

I took that Fish to Panama for CS PREP SCHOOL where Tom Curren hoped on it. I don’t think that he’s gonna change sponsors but it was fun to see him enjoying something I had a hand in making. It was so much fun helping Paul shape that fish. I can’t wait to shape a board all by myself. It was also fun having a real life example in front of me of what it means to strive to do “everything” for the glory of God. Oh, by the way, “AFG” stands for All For God.
